(this is Q&A from GSIM e-training Concept Group)

Question 1. What is the purpose of the Referential objects in the Structures group? Did these originate from SDMX? If all objects in the Concepts group are stored e.g. in an information resource and can be linked to other objects in the Structures group, what is the additional need for the Referential objects?

=> These objects can be used to disseminate referential metadata, e.g. to Eurostat. As a matter of fact, a mapping can be done between concepts used in GSIM and the ones in SDMX for datasets as well as for data structures. SDMX was created some years earlier, so these referential objects might have originated from there.

Question 2. How does Data Point Modelling play a role in what we've discussed today? There seems to be a large overlap between the two? Also, are the DPM models available for re-use?

(from Jay Greenfield

The “Data Point Model” is already part of the “GSIM Structural Group”:

Here is the Dataset context in GSIM:

This is not to say that the "Data Point Model” in the “GSIM Structural Group” is sufficiently complete that it can be used to represent geospatial information (Question 1) or that without additions it can be used as a basis for building a metadata system (Question here).

In DDI 4 the “Data Point Model” is more complete:

Several classes have been added including ValueMapping, ConceptualValue and InstanceValue.
