Brief description:

Statistics Canada celebrates #Canada150 and #StatCan100 by strategic planning of communication. Year 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation, a unique opportunity to showcase the wealth of Statistics Canada’s expertise and information, and 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of Statistics Canada. Key themes of the 150th anniversary include:

  • Diversity and inclusiveness
  • Indigenous peoples
  • Youth
  • Environment

The campaign included engaging the public with a program of activities:

  • Speaker Series – Canada 150
  • Connecting Stats, Stories and People
  • Young Statistician Contest
  • Social media an online channels

Results/impact:

The activities are expected to help to:

  • Reach out to key players, including employees, federal family and the academic sector.
  • Engage employees in finding historical photos and artifacts to create a storyboard ‘100 years journey of StatCan’.
  • Increase the reach and visibility

 Difficulties/lessons learned:

The real challenge is recognizing opportunities to raise their communications activities to a new level. Measuring the impact of branding and outreach is still a challenge. We must always ask ourselves: Putting aside budget, time and resources constraints, could we have done things differently? Would a different approach have been more successful?
