Office for National Statistics of the United Kingdom Unpaid work feature image

Brief description:

Visual.ONS was launched to provide official statistics in a format that is easier to understand and faster to digets. The site provides users with new kinds of releases from short articles to infographics and interactive data visualisations - we are able to  evaluate usage data to iterate and improve the way we communicate with the general public.

Results/impact:

The current featured piece on maps illustrates different data sets on a map of the UK and is useful for comparisons. There are news such as:

  • Women shoulder the responsibility of ‘unpaid work’
  • Assessing the UK post-referendum economy
  • How does UK healthcare spending compare internationally? etc.

User experience: If you're in the market to buy a new house, it might be worth checking this out to find out where your next move might be...I've already chosen Burnley for my next move. What this shows is that there is real potential for data published by the ONS to spark wider discussion and debate when presented in an accessible format." Ed Conway, Sky: "Great @ONS interactive graphic shows what we spend our money on"

Difficulties/lessons learned:

Visual.ONS has already drummed up some positive engagement in its first few months. With a particular piece of analysis on 'single people in the UK' using Census data capturing the imagination.
