Input Privacy-preserving Techniques

Progress

In November, the results of the project, where completed, were presented in the IPPT seminar. The most important conclusions are presented as well as the results of the different tracks.
The first version of the public Wiki has been set up. Agreements have been made about finalizing the documentation.
17 responses were received to the public consultation. It has been decided to extend this consultation until 15 January. Responses are still expected.

Next Steps

The different tracks complete their reporting. These are then included in the public wiki. The UNECE Secretariat will guide these activities.
A joint meeting with the UN petlab is planned in January to discuss the results and pass the baton.

Meta Academy for the Modernization of Official Statistics

Progress

The results of the project were presented by its project managers, Kate Burnett-Issacs (Statistics Canada) and Eric Anvar (OECD). The main goal was to initiate a framework and forum to facilitate co-creation and reuse of training across NSOs by unleashing the creation and use, at scale, of open digital assets to boost employee upskilling. Based on national experiences and existing initiatives, the main barriers for effective training were identified. Further insights were obtained through experiment on the co-creation of a training on Git and version control. The main conclusion was that without a shareable and accessible platform or method to host training, content and delivery cannot go anywhere. As mentioned earlier, a Meta Academy seminar was held following the HLG workshop, on 24 November.

Data Governance for Interoperability Framework

Progress

Advances in 2022:

  • Definition of the scope of the Project to achieve the alignment of efforts
  • Agreements on relevant concepts for the project as well as the definitions to be used
  • List of contents to be integrated into the document that will result from the project
  • Design of the initial structure of the document

Work in progress:

  • Generation of contents for the document
  • Analyse improvements to the document structure
  • Development of use cases
  • Incorporation of Carlo Vaccari as project manager to the project

Next Steps

Work for the first quarter of 2023:

  • Implement the improvements to the document structure
  • Review of the use cases
  • Finalize the description of the framework components
  • Decide about having a sprint during the first semester of 2023

IN PROGRESS

Completed with eight potential topics identified. Three of them were selected as the activities for 2023 (see below)

Data Editing

IN PROGRESS

A use case template and some guiding questions have been prepared, together with one use case from the ABS, one from StatCan and one from INE (see here).

The team has discussed with the Chair of the Organising Committee of the Data Editing Expert Meeting for collaboration.

The team is currently reviewing the use cases and revising the use case template to clarify what is expected from the use case and to improve the consistency.

Modeling

IN PROGRESS

A use case template and some guiding questions have been prepared, together with two brief use cases from the INEGI, one from StatsCan, one from the IMF and one from the ONS (see here).

The team is currently reviewing the use cases and revising the use case template to clarify what is expected from the use case and to improve the consistency

Responsible AI

IN PROGRESS

A literature review that summarizes the experience of different NSOs on responsible AI/ML is being conducted (see here). A draft document has been created to facilitate the preparation of the international framework (see here).

The team is currently reviewing the guiding principle on ethical purpose and public good

Other

There is no Chair of the group yet.

The Group will recruit members of the ML group to the relevant task teams. While members are open to new ideas, they suggested to focus on the three task teams unless there are more resources

Capacity Building

IN PROGRESS

ONS-UNECE Machine Learning Group - ran a successful Coffee and Coding session on 2 Nov with Statistics Canada providing an introduction to Git and live demo of Github. Some 213 colleagues from over 40 different organisations attended. Participants were very engaged in the session with many questions asked. 87% of survey respondents rated the session as good or very good. Outcome: building core data science skills for reproducibility and collaboration in ML

Communications

IN PROGRESS

The group held its end of year webinar on 30 November. Each of the seven theme groups presented their work across two sessions, the first focussing on ML applications, and the second on ML in production. Around 170 people attended each session. 94% of survey respondents said the webinar itself was either excellent or very good. One piece of feedback received said “For someone relatively new to ML it was inspiring.”

(see programme and recording here and feedback here)

The group has published a new report providing an overview of its work and key lessons learned from this year’s activities. It has also published a number of technical reports from the different Theme Groups, detailing their research activities and discussions.

ACTION: Please promote the group outputs within your networks

Other

The UNECE will hold an ML conference next year, 5-7 June 2023 More information will be made available on this page.

Brief initial discussions have been held with Eurostat and CSO Ireland re their interest in setting up a similar group next year.
