Eurostat
The COVID-19 crisis had a direct impact on the production of European official statistics and, at the same time, led to an increased demand for data published by Eurostat and the National Statistical Institutes (NSIs) of the European Statistical System (ESS). In the face of the early stages of the crisis, Eurostat and its ESS partners worked closely together to develop practical solutions and concrete responses to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 outbreak. This document is based on the experience gathered by Eurostat and 15 out of the 18 National Statistical Institutes, who together constituted the ‘Task Force on ESS strategic communication’, created in March 2020. It presents the first summary of the challenges faced and the communication actions taken by NSIs during these earlier stages of the COVID-19 crisis in 2020, as well as the lessons learned in the first months of the spread of the pandemic. The first version of the document was published in May 2020 and was updated and republished in September 2020. The document therefore provides a snapshot of how such a crisis was tackled at the early stages which may provide a useful reference for communication professionals.
