A few weeks ago during the Modernstats World Workshop we had the chance to ask participants how the Modernstats Models have impacted their work of producing official statistics. During a panel session representatives from Hungary, Italy, Canada, and Sweden talked about how their organizations have benefited from the Modernstats models.

The panelists mentioned efficiency gains as one of the main and most obvious benefits of the models. The models have been helpful when statistical organizations have been planning or going through a reorganization process or when they have wanted to shift focus from products to processes, for example. Often, reorganization has been the driving force for organizations to adopt the models.

In addition, the models have been useful in providing a common language to ensure that everybody in the office is talking about the same thing. They also provide an excellent foundation for methodology and sharing. Canada mentioned that they have even used GSBPM as a reference model in capacity development activities.

In the case of Hungary and Italy, it was staff who sparked the use of the models. In Hungary, it was a bottom up process starting from the methodologists, although it didn’t take long for top management to recognize the benefits. In Italy, the use of the models began in small islands in the organization before spreading further.

One of the good things about the models is that they are flexible and can be adapted to the specific needs of the organization. Sweden mentioned that they have tailored GAMSO and GSIM to fit their requirements. Currently, they are looking into CSPA to understand how it can best help their organization.

The panelists all agreed that international cooperation has been a key factor in helping their organizations modernize statistical production and encouraged other organizations to take up the models as well. Sweden even called the models their fast track pass to modern statistics.
