Modernisation of statistical Modernising statistical production is a key priority for all statistical organisations. The High Level Group for the Modernisation of Official Statistics (HLG-MOS) has set out a vision defining long-term goals and overseen development , and developed a range of models and standards to help to achieve themit.

However, statistical organisations need to know how far they are along the road to modernisation, and what the next steps are. To meet these needs, a Modernisation Maturity Model (MMM) and associated Roadmap have been developed. They allow statistical organisations to:

  1. Self-assess their level of "maturity" with regard to implementation of the HLG-MOS vision; and
  2. Refer to a set of tools that guide statistical organisations toward a higher level of maturity.

The MMM and its Roadmap should be useful to any organisation regardless of their level of maturity. They also acknowledge that within one statistical organisation there can be different maturity levels depending on the statistical domain or part of the organisation. So how does a statistical organisation get started, or make further progress with modernisation? The first step is to know the starting point. The Modernisation Maturity Model has been developed as a self-assessment tool for this purpose. It can be used to assess organisational maturity against different criteria and dimensions.

The next step is to understand how to progress to higher levels of maturity. The Roadmap provides a set of tools to help with this. We also plan to add information about experiences of organisations that have already made progress, highlighting what worked for them, and what didn't
