Developments in applying global grids

29 April 2021 (14.00 to 15.00 Central European Time)

This coffee talk featured the following presentations, followed by an open discussion. A recording is available here

1) So You’re Thinking of Trying a Hex DGGS… by Kevin Sahr, Southern Oregon University, United States

Kevin discusses the pros and cons of using a hexagon-based Discrete Global Grid System for analyzing and visualizing gridded data, and give some advice on how users can begin working with two open source options: DGGRID and H3

2) The Road Towards OGC APIs for DGGS by Matt Purss, Pangaea Innovations, Australia

Matt provides a community update on the work currently ramping up in the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) to develop the OGC API standards and implementations to enable systematic web access to DGGS engines. This includes an introduction to the common DGGS topologies that lend themselves to Open API style web access mechanisms that can enable data integration within and between different DGGS (and other) spatial data infrastructures.
